sience road show
2014 Science road show?
On May the 23rd of 2014 class 5 and class 2 walked down to tamaki. We went and lined up into two lines of each class girls lines and a boys line, when we were quite there was this tall man coming out the door introducing us to the show he was very tall he had to bend down when he came down if he wanted to come out all of us we had to look up and one of the our necks were hurting just for looking up for too long cause he was very tall.
My favourite experiment was when we had to rub our hands together and had to make it hot so we had to put our hand under this timer but it was’nt actually a timer it was shaped like a timer inside. There was a red drink inside and when our hands were warm we had to put it under and see if on top of the timer we had to see if it was bubbling on the top when ever we put our hands under it.

How does a guitar make sound?
How does a guitar make sound?
How does a guitar make sound? A guitar is a really popular instrument. There are many famous people that play a guitar.
A guitar has many parts. It has a headstock, it has a neck, tunning pegs, a nut. There is a fingerboard, it has strings, there are frets, theres a heal, and a sound hole.Theres a rib, then theres a bridge, theres a body and theres a rosette.
When you strum the guitar it makes a vibration, the strings shake when you strum it.It sounds loud so it makes sound waves. When you strum it without putting your fingers on it, it makes a loud sound and it echoes.
Do you know how to play the guitar? If you want to sit down and play the guitar you put your hand over the body of the guitar so you can strum or pluck the strings. You put your other hand on the neck and put your hands on the strings then you strum it.If you want to play it standing up you can have a guitar that has a strap around it so you won’t worry about the guitar falling but if you just want a normal guitar you can just so that have to support the guitar from the body while strumming, its just like sitting down when you want to play a song so you have to put your d
Guitars is a really good instrument to play and to learn. Its has a really good sound when you play some chords on the guitar. Next thing you know you might be making a song!

Science experiment
Science experiment:
Question: What will happen to the sound if I change the shape of a piece of paper? (e.g. from a flat shape to a funnel shape)
Links to research about Sound:
Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that…when my partner speaks to me in the funnel then it will be loud.
Materials needed:
paper,tape and a tissue
Experiment (procedure):
e.g. Step 1 - First hold a flat piece of paper against your ear so block your other ear.and block your other ear with your hand get your partner to speak to you what is the sound like can you hear clearly?
Step 2 - next, roll the piece of paper into a funnel shape.put the funnel against your ear. face the funnel towards your partner and listen to them speak. what does it sound like?can you hear clearly
Step 3 - next face the funnel to the other side while your partner speaks to you does it make a difference to the sound that you can hear?
Step 4 - put some cotton balls or tissue into the block end does it make a difference to the sound you hear?
Step 5 - Next, roll the piece of paper up and face one end of the paper roll towards your partner. Listen to your partner speak. Is there a difference to the sound you hear?
Step 6- Finally, turn to the side with your paper roll and listen to your partner speak. What is the sound like?

1
|
flat piece of paper
|
it sounds the same
|
2
|
funnel facing to the front towards my ear
|
it sounds louder
|
3
|
funnel facing to the other side
|
I cant hear the person speaking

tissue blocking funnel
|
i can’t hear my partner speaking clearly or loudly
|
5
|
rolled up piece of paper (facing to the front)
|
it sounds different
|
6
|
rolled up piece of paper (facing to the other side)
|
I cant hear anything
|
Observations:
when the flat piece of paper is used and when someone speaks to me it doesnt make a difference to the sound. When i faced my funnel in the front It was sounding louder. When the funnel was facing the side i could’nt hear my partner speaking.
when the tissue was blocking the funnel I couldnt hear my partner speaking.when my funnel was facing the front I could hear my partner speaking but it sounded like she was whispering. When my funnel was facing the other side it sounded different from when i faced the other side.
Conclusion:
My Hypothesis was right cause when my buddy was speaking to me through the funnel it was very loud.

Music
Music
Music can be really relaxing and calming. Music is when you listen to a song then you can hear the beats and the vocals. Music is when they write some songs then they get an artist like Bruno Mars to sing it. All you can hear is “just the way you are”.
The impact of music can affect your brain because when you listen to old music it might bring back memories. If the music is too loud then it might hurt your brain and it might damage your ears.
People’s favourite Artist these days are:
Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Will.I.AM, Pharrel Williams, Jay-Z,Naomi Streamer, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Madonna and
Katy Perry, Ed sheeran, Adele, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. These famous people make heaps of money.
Instruments are very important to a song. You need beats and some kind of instrument’s that can be used for a song like the basic instrument is the drums cause it keeps in time with the song. Here are some instrument’s thats appear in some songs: Bruno Mars uses a guitar for most of his songs,Will.I.AM uses any kind but in most if his songs are electric Pianos. Stevie Wonder is like his like an old artist he plays piano and a kazoo. Alicia Keys plays the piano and Ed sheeran his famous instrument is a guitar.
Music is really cool. Make sure if you want to be a famous artist make sure you know your artist history so you could be like Stevie Wonder sometime.

My Science experiment
Science experiment:
Question: What will happen to the sound if I cut the straw shorter and blow through it?
Links to research about Sound:
Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that….
it might sound different, sounding higher if I cut It shorter
Materials needed:
straw, scissors
Experiment (procedure):
e.g. Step 1 - crease straw 2-3cm on one end
Step 2 - cut creased straw into a triangle shape.blow air into cut end
Step 3 - listen to the sound it makes
Step 4 - cut the straw shorter
Step 5 - blow on the cut end and listen
Data (What happened?)
15cm
|
makes a loud sound
|
10cm
|
sound was higher
|
5cm
|
sound was more higher pitched
|
Observations:
When it was 15cm it made a loud sound. I cut it 10 cm shorter and the sound went higher. When it was 5cm the sound was more higher pitched.
Conclusion:
The straw sounded high pitched when I cut it shorter. My hypothesis was correct.

Term 2 first Assembly
Assembly
The whole school went inside the hall cause it was the whole school assembly. All of the teams were doing a production for there team.We were all doing a science theme and then he used a picture from the movie up, Mr.Burt had to use his New York toy cabin he had to see if the
Team 1 went first there slide show was about the Zoo keepers and how to keep the animals in the zoo safe and the equipment they need for the animals, they showed pictures about animals and videos about them and they showed them what kind of food the animals eat and how they set it up for the animals.
Team 2 did a production about Flight, airplanes, thrust, drag and gravity, they even did a play about how the planes go up and down. They made some paper planes and there are some planes that they buy from the shop so they tested the planes out so they can see how the planes fly and how far they go.
Team 3 did a production about Light, colours and speed of light, team 4 teachers did a play to show us the colours of the waves, a teacher got Mr.Jacobson to be there assistance so they gave them a green sheet to wear behind him then the colours ( the teachers) they had to go to Mr.jacobson and go under the sheet but all the other colours had to go under the sheet but the green colour could not go under the green sheet.
Team 4 they did a production about the sea and what’s going to sink or what’s going to float they did a video about the sea and what they call something when they put something in the water and that is called desplates after that that they asked us some questions about the video and if we get it right we can get a choclate bar.
Team 5 did a production about sound and physics, the teachers had to make a instrument that makes sounds and they showed us a video about the teachers doing a music video and them dancing on it and the teachers had to make there instruments and perform it in front of the camera.
We have finished the productions for the teams now we have to go back to class.
